Springhead Community Primary School

Staffordshire County Council appointed Tarpey Woodfine Architects to design an extension to Springhead School, providing a new community library and IT suite.

The existing school dates back to the 1960s and comprises several flat-roof buildings. The site is steeply sloping and overlooked by a number of houses. In order to not impose on the existing properties, the design evolved to include a single-storey green roof, which is attractive when viewed from above and fits in with the form of the current school buildings. The additional benefit is that the storm water from the new roof will not exacerbate potential flooding.

The library includes two large glazed walls, giving occupants a pleasant view over the playing fields and maximising natural light into the spaces. Following the completion of the library, a new corridor link was added to the school and an additional classroom.
