Brampton Museum Extension

Extension to Museum Building to provide new art gallery rooms, new multi-function teaching spaces, a café and external amenity areas.

In 2018 Newcastle Borough Council and Brampton Museum secured Heritage funding to allow for extensions to form new gallery spaces and flexible teaching / craft areas. These had to be sensitively designed in a significant building in the Newcastle-under-Lyme Conservation area.

The new art gallery space occupies a central courtyard in the older building. It was designed to let in natural light through UV filtered glass. Renewable systems were fitted to control temperature and humidity so that exhibits can be kept to national museum standards.

The teaching rooms, café and outdoor decking areas were designed to be flexible multifunctional spaces, with an acoustic sliding partition dividing the main rooms. Large, glazed openings provide a link to new decking areas and the outdoor garden spaces. An oak pergola brise soleil combined with cross ventilation through automated rooflights, reduce summer overheating and provide passive ventilation. Heating and electricity are now generated by renewable heat pump and photovoltaic systems.
