Lancaster Building

In 2008, we were appointed by Newcastle Borough Council to fully refurbish Lancaster Building, a grade 2 listed three-storey building in Newcastle town centre built in the late 1930s.

The project involved installation of a new glass lift, improved insulation, double-glazed steel windows, heating and lighting, toilets, glazed perimeter canopy and improved disabled access. A number of original features were retained and painstakingly restored such as terrazzo floors, travertine walls, cantilevered concrete canopy and brass, bronze and lead fittings.

Tarpey Woodfine were architects and lead consultants, working in collaboration with a full design team as well as the local planning authority, conservation officer, English heritage and project funders.

The building was completed in 2010 and was commended in the North Staffordshire Architecture and Urban design awards for sensitive refurbishment and contribution to the sustainability and regeneration of Town Centres.
